Time has been kind towards the legacy of our dear Procol Harum, they could easily due to the majority of their fan base (biased on age alone) have been relegated to the "oldies" circuit but aside from some double bills with their peers over the years continue to fill (and sell out) venues on their own volition, such was the case at The City Winery a quaint wine cellar which also has a dining menu, I still cannot get used to people eating during a concert but I suppose it is no different in its own way as having a beer and hot dog at a sporting event.
My dear friend Sarah gifted me a ticket in a surprise move to the show but sadly could not attend due to work considerations so scramble I had to for a suitable friend to take her seat, Sarah is impossible to replace but she implored me to attend as opposed to my keen idea for her to sell the tickets and recoup her losses. I asked Jamie who has seen Procol quite a few times over the years as a fan this ticket must go to instead of a curious onlooker.
The band took to the stage on time and being new to the world of teatotalling I did not get to sample a glass of city wineries "in house" wine and simply refused to eat a plate of anything so as to transfix my attention to the concert proper. A good mixture of mostly rare LP cuts (The Devil Came From Kansas was Intense) thrown in with a few hits was performed, The band sounded flawless and Garys voice still Glorious. Of course "A Whiter Shade of Pale" was performed and of course they had to, it being the signature song, this was greeted with rapturous applause as well it should be, the younger me would approach scoffing at any band performing their big hits preferring "deep cuts" but as I mellow and wisen I see that this must be done (unless you are King Crimson) to please the once in a lifetime ticket buyers and to appease the lighter (in interest not in weight) fans.
Here are a few of the "deep cuts" I captured with my point and shoot camera while bobbing and weaving past the guys head who sat in front of me. "Bringing Home The Bacon" begins prior to the top of the tune as I have taken to giving chance a try as every track will be great anyways and filming before the song begins with no prior knowledge to myself of what it shall be.
